Intrinsic viscosity determination – dilute solution viscometry

«Dilute solution viscometry» - is a cheap, easily accessible, precise, and therefore widespread method for determining many physical parameters, including the intrinsic viscosity of the polymer solutions. This article defines intrinsic viscosity parameter and describes the method of «dilute solution viscometry», measurement equipment (capillary viscometers, such as Ubbelohde, falling-ball and rolling-ball viscometers) and two main methods for intrinsic viscosity measuring: single-concentration measurement and multi-concentration measurement. Next, the article deals with the intrinsic viscosity calculation by measuring of other viscosity of other types (inherent, relative, specific, reduced), at different concentrations of polymers in solution. At the end one can find the correlation between intrinsic viscosity and the molar mass of the polymer via the Mark-Houwink equation; there is a table with the values of the constants of Mark-Houwink equation for some polymer-solvent combinations. After conclusions one can find contacts of our company.
